Rusticated UNILAG student joins Twitter

Handed a four-semester suspension for criticising the management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Olorunfemi Adeyeye says he will not back down.

The Department of Building student joined Twitter on Tuesday morning to continue “speaking out against injustice”.

Olorunfemi Adeyeye.
Many Nigerians have shown support for Olorunfemi Adeyeye.

“I came on Twitter because many of my friends said it will help us reach more Nigerians with the cause for which we fight,” Adeyeye told NewsroomNG moments after his handle (@phemi_adeyeye) went live.

While UNILAG students protested the lack of basic amenities, Adeyeye wrote an opinion questioning the decision of the school to clampdown on peaceful demonstrators.

UNILAG suspended academic activities, reopened the school, and summoned protest leaders before a disciplinary committee. None of those indicted for various offences got less than two-semester rustication.

Adeyeye was handed a four-semester ban for the opinion he wrote in which he said concerning UNILAG Vice Chancellor Rahman:

“Vice Chancellor sir! You remain a first class Chemical Engineering graduate from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. What has happened to the Great Ife in you? Our power generation is deteriorating and you are alive. The nation’s investment of knowledge on you to make you a scholar is a WASTE. Your first class honours degree is the true definition of a FIASCO.”

Adeyeye recently went viral after standing by his comment.

The student told our correspondent:

“I may join Instagram soon. But I don’t think I will ever open a Snapchat account because I’m no fan of the platform. Before now, I was only on Facebook and LinkedIn. I probably had other social media accounts I have forgotten about now.”

Adeyeye had 29 followers as at the time we published this post.
