“Reshuffling election sequence will undermine INEC independence” – Prof Jega
February 22, 2018
Former INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has said the National Assembly is not in the best position to alter the sequence of the 2019 elections.
The lawmakers have been deliberating on reshuffling the elections sequence, but Jega says the move would undermine the independence of INEC.
He also said the reshuffling, if successful, would cost the country more.
Jega, speaking at an event organised by the Youth Initiative for Advocacy Growth and Development in Abuja on Thursday, added that several sections of the 1999 Constitution clearly state that the power to organise and set the date for elections remain the exclusive preserve of INEC.
