Rescue operations at collapsed school building concluded, estimated death toll reaches 19
The General Manager of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Mr. Adeshina Tiamiyu has disclosed that rescue operations at the collapsed school building has been concluded.
He indicated that the site has been turned upside down and all the rubble has been scooped out.
The building which housed Ohen Nursery and Primary School, at No 63 Masey street in Itafaji, Lagos Island collapsed on Wednesday morning with some pupils and other occupants trapped inside.
The death toll from the incident has been estimated to reach 19 as government officials give conflicting figures.
Witnesses say that at least 12 pupils died in the collapsed building, together with the proprietor of the school, and a pregnant woman.
Among the deceased include many other adults who were in the building when it crumbled.
Over 40 people were rescued alive and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
