Pope Francis’s Funeral Set for Saturday, Vatican Announces
In a solemn announcement this morning, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis’s funeral will take place on Saturday, with final arrangements in motion to honour the beloved pontiff.
The day of remembrance will begin tomorrow when Pope Francis’s coffin is transported in a poignant procession from the Casa Santa Marta, his residence, to the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica. There, Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, who serves as the Vatican’s de facto administrator until a new pope is selected, will lead a liturgy before the faithful are invited to pay their respects.
The funeral mass will commence at 10 a.m. on Saturday, held in front of the grand St. Peter’s Basilica. In keeping with the Vatican’s directives issued last year, the ceremony will follow the Rite of Burial for the Roman Pontiff, a simplified protocol personally approved by Pope Francis himself.
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals, will celebrate the mass, marking a momentous occasion for the 252 cardinals, often referred to as the “princes of the church,” who will gather in solemn reverence.
