Police officers brutally beaten, accused of attempted kidnap by fleeing suspect in Edo
Two police officers were descended upon by an angry mob in Edo on Friday, following allegations that they were kidnappers.
The men were thought to be on a mission to kidnap a victim in the state, and were reportedly intercepted by a mob in front of the house of the immediate past Local Government Chairman house, Hon. Folorusho Akerejola.
The officers arrived at the house armed with AK 47 riffles, Police uniform and a police Hilux van. They were brutally beaten.
The Edo State Police Command PRO, Moses Nkombe, however said on Monday that the police officers only trailed a suspect to the state.
“They were not kidnappers. The were policemen who pursued a felon into Edo State. It was the person they were pursuing that raised that alarm; the person failed to stop, so he was pursued across the border into Edo State,” Nkombe said.
“Because he felt that he was in his area in Edo State, he raised the alarm. He was just being mischievous.”
He added that the policemen suffered minor injuries due to the beating and had been released while the suspect was arrested.
“It was not a case of kidnapping at all,” he said.
