Police arrest two suspected armed robbers terrorising Enugu residents

Two alleged armed robbers, Ejike Nomeh and Sopulu Edeh, have been arrested by the police in Enugu.

Ejike and Sopulu allegedly specialised in breaking into people’s homes to steal their valuables.

Ejike’s was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly broke in and ransacked an apartment in the Emene area of Enugu. He allegedly made away with the phones and other valuables of the occupants of the apartment.

Victims of the robbery raised an alarm and Ejike was arrested with his loot about an hour later.

Police spokesperson in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, said Ejike confessed that he sometimes raped his female victims.

“The suspect, Ejike Nomeh, is now helping the police operatives in their investigations and he has revealed that he is an ex-convict, after he was jailed for committing similar offences in the past.

“According to him (Nomeh), he specialised in breaking into peoples’ houses to steal valuables at gunpoint, and sometimes, he raped his victims,” Amaraizu said.

The second suspect, Sopulu, according to the police spokesperson, belonged to a gang of criminals who specialised in burglary and armed robbery.

Amaraizu said he and his gang members, numbering four, were usually armed with machetes during their robbery operations.

Sopulu was arrested on Wednesday, September 26, when he and his gang broke into the house of an unnamed woman at Rehab Road, in the Emene area of Enugu, and demanded money and other valuables.

His gang members escaped, and Amaraizu said the police was on their trail.

Sopulu, during his parade by the police, claimed that the robbery operation during which he was arrested was his first outing with the gang.

Amaraizu said the suspect was lying as he had been on police’s wanted list for a while.

“Sopulu Edeh claimed that it was his first time of joining the gang for an operation but, from police records, he has been on the wanted list following his criminal activities within Emene and its environs,” Amaraizu said.
