Peter Obi Condemns Alleged Threats Against NYSC Member Over Viral Criticism of Government

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has strongly condemned the reported threats against Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who recently spoke out about Nigeria’s economic struggles.

Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, gained widespread attention after posting a viral video in which she criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the country’s worsening economic conditions. However, shortly after her video went viral, she alleged that she received threats from NYSC officials, raising concerns about freedom of expression in the country.

In response, Obi took to social media platform X to express solidarity with Uguamaye, drawing parallels between her experience and his own history of facing intimidation for offering constructive criticism of government policies.

“The National Youth Corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, also known as Raye, recently had an experience that highlights a troubling trend in our nation—one where voices of reason and truth are met with intimidation rather than dialogue and engagement,” Obi wrote.

Obi stressed that silencing dissenting voices is a dangerous precedent that erodes democracy, accountability, and good governance. He warned that a government that suppresses criticism is often corrupt and resistant to reform.

“I, too, have been subjected to threats for daring to offer constructive suggestions and comments. I now face daily intimidation, harassment, and name-calling simply for expressing solution-based views on government policies,” he added.

The former Anambra governor urged the Tinubu-led administration to reconsider its stance on dissent, emphasizing that constructive criticism is essential for democratic progress.
