Pelé – Brazilian football legend who acted in movies and composed songs for music stars
Edson Arantes do Nascimento – Pelé, the Brazilian football legend who became a global football star at age 17 after shining at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, died on Thursday, December 29, 2022. He was 82.
His family said he died in a hospital at Sao Paulo on Thursday.
“Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today,” a statement on his Twitter page read.
Aside from acting in several movies and composing songs for Brazilian music stars, he was also Brazilian sports minister.
Pelé, in a career spanning 21 years, was the first and only player to win the FIFA world cup three times: 1958, 1962 and 1970. He won 10 league titles with Santos, his club team. He was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) and was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the Century alongside Maradona. He is also recognised by the Guinness World Record for the most career goals.
