PDP Governors Condemn Fubara’s Suspension as Rivers Governor

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, calling it a “grievous mistake” and an “atrocious and retrograde decision.”

The backlash follows Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State on Tuesday night, a move that also led to the suspension of the governor, his deputy, and the state assembly members. In place of the elected leadership, the president appointed retired Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the administrator of the oil-rich state.

Reacting to the development, Bala Mohammed, the Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, issued a scathing statement on Wednesday, accusing the presidency of orchestrating a political coup against democracy.

Mohammed lambasted Tinubu’s handling of the Rivers crisis, particularly his silence on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike’s alleged role in fueling the political turmoil.

“He [Wike] has become a law unto himself because he played out your script. Now we know. This is statesmanly, biased, and divisive,” Mohammed’s statement read.

The governor warned that Tinubu’s intervention posed a severe threat to Nigeria’s democracy, cautioning that it could worsen political instability, deepen mistrust, and exacerbate security challenges.

“This unwarranted attack on Rivers State and the opposition parties is the greatest threat to democracy in Nigeria today. It is an ill wind that will blow no one any good,” he stated.
