Overpopulation: FG plans to ratify maximum number of children allowed women

The Federal Government has said it is working on a policy that would determine the maximum number of children allowed for women in Nigeria.

The policy, according to Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, is necessary due to the overpopulation scare and economic challenges facing the country.

Nigeria currently boasts of almost 200 million people and there are concerns that figure could double by 2050.

At the moment, the nation struggles to provide adequate welfare for its citizens.

Ahmed, while fielding questions during a session at the 24th Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday, noted that the country’s population had been identified as one of the great challenges confronting the successful implementation of the ERGP.

“We have been engaging traditional rulers and other leaders. Specifically, we have found out that to be able to address one of the great challenges that we identified in the ERGP, which is the growth in our population, we need to engage these institutions,” she said.

“And we hope that with their support, we will get to a point where we can come out with the policy that limits the number of children that a mother can have because that is important for sustaining our growth.”

In June 2018, Nigeria was ranked the poverty capital of the world with more than 86 million of its citizens living in extreme poverty –  on less than a dollar a day.
