OSUN: Teenagers who roasted UNIOSUN student’s head for money ritual sentenced to death

The killers of Oluwafemi Shonibare, a 400-level Microbiology student of the Osun State University, have been sentenced to death.

Shonibare went missing in June 2017 and his decomposing body was found days later close to an Islamic cleric, Isiaq Yusuf’s house.

19-year-old Abdulrofiu Zakariyahu and two others – Yusuf Kareem,18, and Ayuba Ibrahim, 20 – were arrested in connection with the murder which they carried out around 10pm in the Oke-Baale area of Osogbo.

Zakariyahu, a student training with the cleric, had confessed that they killed Shonibare with a pestle before cutting his body parts, including his roasting his head, for ritual purpose.

They proceeded to bury the student’s remains at the back of Isiaq’s compound.

Isiaq, 40, and one Abdulkareen Adeoti, 50, were also arrested during investigation into the crime.

Justice Kadijat Akano, while giving her judgment at the Osun State High Court on Monday, ruled that Zakariyahu, Kareem and Ibrahim were guilty of conspiracy, misconduct and murder.

Akano, however, stated that there was no concrete evidence that Isiaq, a leader of the Jafariya sect, was involved in the killing. She subsequently discharged and acquitted him.

She also noted that Adeoti, on his part, knew that Zakariyahu and his gang had killed Shonibare but did not report to the police until the perpetrators were arrested. Adeoti was sentenced to two years in prison.
