Oshoala Wins CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award for the Sixth Time
Super Falcons Forward, Asisat Oshoala, clinches the CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award for an unprecedented sixth time.
The Barcelona forward emerged victorious over competitors Barbara Banda from Zambia and Thembi Kgatlana from South Africa. Oshoala played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s success, securing the UEFA Women’s Champions League and guiding her club to an undefeated league title.
Oshoala also left a significant mark on the Super Falcons’ journey at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, leading Nigeria to the knockout phase before being eliminated by World Cup finalists England.
She scored a crucial goal for the Falcons against Australia in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, propelling Nigeria to a 3-2 victory. Additionally, she became the first African to score in three FIFA Women’s World Cups.
The Super Falcons star has previously claimed the award in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, and now in 2023. Oshoala is widely regarded as one of the greatest African women’s players. Since the beginning of 2016, only South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana can contest winning the Women’s Player award, underscoring Oshoala’s dominance in women’s football in Africa over the years.
Furthermore, Oshoala’s Nigerian teammate, Chiamaka Nnadozie, secured the Goalkeeper of the Year title over Morocco’s Khadija Er-Kmichi and South Africa’s Andile Diamini. The Super Falcons were also named the Women’s Team of the Year, triumphing over Morocco and South Africa.
In her acceptance speech, Oshoala said the award was a team effort made possible by both her national team and the Barca team.
“This night, I would love to use this opportunity to thank everyone who has been part of my journey from grassroots football to the national level to the club side. Because without you, my coaches, and my teammates, there will be no me,” She said.
