Orji Kalu Begs Court For Bail On Grounds of Serious Ill-health

Barely two weeks after his conviction, the former governor of Abia State, Orji Kalu has filed for a bail application to enable him to attend to serious health issues.

He explained that the medical facilities in the prison cannot handle his illness while he appeals his 12-year jail sentence.

But the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo argued against the plea. He stated that bail is only applicable to an accused person and not someone who has been found guilty and convicted as such.

“There is no recent medical report to show his state of health,” Oyedepo said while adding that the medical facility at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre is capable of handling Kalu’s health condition.

Kalu was recently sentenced to 12 years in prison for money laundering. His company, Slok Nigeria Limited was equally forfeited to the federal government in the case.

Over time, many Nigerian public officials who are undergoing prosecution or have cases to answer with the law have claimed to be sick to either delay the process or opt-out of being prosecuted.
