Ooni of Ife: Burial of Oba Sijuwade “stalled as person expected to be buried alive with king goes missing”
August 12, 2015
A Yoruba Oro Cult is expected to announce the death of famous monarch Ooni of Ife, Oba Sijuwade, today.
A human being, as in a living human being, will be buried alive with the monarch.
The chosen one is called “abobaku,” meaning “one who dies with the king.”
Well, reports say burial rights for the late Ooni have been stalled.
“Abobaku” is on the run…that’s what reports say. The “one who dies with the king” wants to live.
Earlier, Nigerians had called the practice “an excuse for murder.”
Students in Ile-Ife have also mocked the tradition.
