One-Day CEO: How MTN inspires Nigerian youth to dream big

Last month, 15-year-old Ikenna Ikechukwu took on the prestigious role of CEO at MTN Nigeria for a day. This remarkable opportunity to lead one of Africa’s biggest companies came as a reward for his victory in the 2024 MTN mPulse Spelling Bee competition. 

MTN Nigeria’s “CEO for a Day” initiative is part of its broader commitment to education and youth empowerment. By providing young achievers with real-world leadership exposure, MTN continues to reinforce the potential of today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders.

This initiative not only rewards academic excellence but also instills confidence in young Nigerians, proving that with hard work and determination, they can achieve extraordinary feats.

So, every year since its inception, a secondary school student has held arguably the most powerful seat in the Nigerian telecoms industry for a day. Like Kate Ene in 2023 and  Ifeoluwa Ademuwa in 2019, Ikechukwu, a student of Glorious Covenant School in Rivers State, was at the helm of the company’s affairs on the 15th of February 2025.

When he arrived at the MTN Plaza in Falomo, Lagos, on the 15th of February 2025, he was warmly welcomed by Ugonwa Nwonye, Chief Customer Relations and Experience Officer. His schedule was packed with high-level engagements, including chairing an executive committee meeting, addressing a press conference, interacting with employees across various departments, and visiting the MTN Aromire service center.

During the ceremonial handover, Dr. Karl Toriola, the outgoing CEO, commended Ikechukwu’s academic prowess and resilience. He said: “Today, I’m handing over the reins of MTN Nigeria to you. This is a reward for your achievement, but just the beginning of greater things ahead,” 

Ikechukwu’s journey to the CEO’s chair began in November 2024, when he triumphed over nearly 40,000 students nationwide in the spelling bee competition. His defining moment came when he correctly spelled “Cornucopia” in just six seconds, securing a ₦5 million scholarship and additional prizes.

Reflecting on his experience, Ikechukwu expressed gratitude and excitement. “I never thought I would become the CEO of MTN Nigeria, but here I am as the CEO for a day,” he said, adding that he hoped his journey would inspire other young Nigerians to set high aspirations. He emphasized the importance of digital access for learning and career development, crediting the MTN mPulse platform for providing valuable educational resources.

Under Ikechukwu’s leadership, discussions centered on impactful digital solutions. “We’re in a digital era, and it’s important to lead conversations around technology that truly makes an impact,” he stated. “By using digital tools with the power of data, we can inspire creativity and shape a better future.”
