Ondo governor Rotimi Akeredolu says he has tested positive for COVID-19

Rotimi Akeredolu

Ondo State Governor, Rotimii Akeredolu (SAN), on Tuesday, announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Akeredolu in a video shared on his verified Twitter page said he was treated for malaria a few days ago and felt better but one of his colleagues advised him to take COVID-19 test.

“At the time we had the NEC meeting, one of my colleagues advised me that malaria should not be treated lightly and that I should take the coronavirus test, the result came out today and I tested positive and I am asymptomatic,” the Ondo governor said.

He added that his doctors have advised that he should take the normal treatment and self-isolate. “I believe supervised home management will be ideal for me for now,” Akeredolu said.

He, however, said while he goes into isolation, he will continue to perform his duties as governor from home where he will be receiving treatment.

It appears the governor has no plan to handover to his deputy, Agboola Ajayi, who recently defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while there are reports that the state lawmakers are moving to impeach him.

About two weeks ago, the governor was seen in a viral video celebrating with members of the State House of Assembly at Ondo Governor’s lodge in Abuja after picking up the APC governorship nomination form at the party secretariat.

In the viral video, the governor sneezed into his hands while he was surrounded by the lawmakers in violation of social distancing. The lawmakers, Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Bamidele Oleyelogun, the governor’s Chief of Staff, Olugbenga Ale and others seen in the video without nose masks may have been exposed to the virus.
