Nigerians experience blackout as power generation drops to 3,456MW

Nigeria’s power generation crises seems to be worsening as the country loses another capacity of 1,108 megawatts of electricity which has left some part of the country in total blackout since Friday last week.

The power generation capacity was initially standing at 4,564.60MW as at less than two weeks ago beginning from February 19 until it went on a decline which has reduced the capacity to a meagre 3,456MW.

Although the system operator indicates that Nigeria has an installed power generation capacity of 12,910.40MW, a stock capacity of 7,652.60MW, and a transmission wheeling capacity of 8,100MW; but the highest generation that it has ever reached is 5,375MW.

The fluctuating power generation in the country has been a painful reality that seems endemic across all administrations of government in the country as no one has proffered any lasting solutions to the problem.

In a bid to fix the problem, the power sector was privatized in 2013 and the regulation of the industry was placed under the purview of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, but the issue still persisted.

Despite the TCN boasting that the national grid generated a record peak of  5,375MW earlier this month, the power generation has fallen far from that capacity to just over 3,000MW.
