Court grants Malami, son N200m bail each in ‘terrorism financing’ case

Abubakar Malami

A federal high court in Abuja has granted bail to former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz Malami, in the sum of N200 million each in connection with alleged terrorism-related offences.

Presiding Judge Joyce Abdulmalik ordered that each defendant provide two sureties in the same amount. One of the sureties is required to present the title deed of a developed property in either Asokoro or Maitama, Abuja. The court also directed that both Malami and his son deposit their international passports.

The father and son were arraigned on February 3 on a five-count charge, which includes allegations of terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms.

The Department of State Services (DSS) alleged that Malami failed to prosecute individuals accused of financing terrorism, despite receiving their case files in his capacity as AGF. The charge sheet states that he “knowingly abetted terrorism financing” by refusing to initiate prosecution, contrary to Section 26(2) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

In addition, the DSS claims that Malami and his son unlawfully possessed a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 live rounds of Redstar AAA 5’20 cartridges, and 27 expended cartridges at their residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, without the requisite licence.
