Nigerians commend Buhari’s rejection of Peace Corps bill
President Buhari has recently not been very popular among Nigerians, but his decision against giving his assent on the Peace Corps bill has been widely applauded.
Buhari told Nigeria’s lawmakers yesterday that the outfit was unnecessary, as it is simply a duplication of existing security agencies.
He also said there would be financial implications if the organisation is allowed to exist.
The decision has attracted wide praise for Buhari from the public.
“That peace corps is a fraud, every rational Nigerian knows this! It’s good that the president declined assent on the bill,” a Twitter user, Nafiu said.

While some lawmakers have said Buhari had no concrete reasons for rejecting the bill, some have said the aim of the organisation was dubious.
One observer said, “Till date, the Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps have scarcely justified their existence, sitting around all over Abuja – in cars and under trees yet someone contrived this dodgy idea of a Peace Corps of dubious relevance?”

The president should also direct the EFCC to commence investigations into the allegations of extortion and fraudulent collection of money from some Nigerians by those criminal peace corps officials

Please When will Peace Corps refund those that paid N40k in applying? @MBuhari needs to also investigate this.

The move by Buhari has, however, had its fair share of critics, mostly from those who wonder what would become of thousands of youths who had shown interest in serving in the organisation.
“What is the faith of the Nigerian youths after president refuse to sign the Nigerian peace corps bill,” one Ismaila Abubakar Danmairomu, queried.

Some have also called for the refund of the N40,000 sum paid by applicants to join Peace Corps.
