A brave Nigerian mother, in a bid to save her children from a raging fire, paid the ultimate price.

But she was unable to save the trapped children, seven in all, from the inferno.

She died with them, all burnt, leaving behind an aged husband and a daughter she had initially rescued from the flames.

The tragedy happened in Ohufu village, Ogboji community in Ishielu local government area of Ebonyi state after fire broke out at 3:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The fire destroyed two thatched houses were the family lived.

The 80-year-old husband of the house, Sylvanus Nwefuru, said his deep sleep was interrupted by shouts of fire. That was how he was able to react and escape.

Mrs Nweferu also escaped and managed to save the life of Ukamaka, her daughter.

She reportedly retuned into the burning structure to rescue her other children but didn’t make it out.

Local authorities say the circumstances surrounding her death along with seven children, and the “mysterious” escape of her husband and daughter, seems shady. It was the husband and daughter who reportedly related the ordeal to the world.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday with other villagers unable to ascertain the cause of the fire. Aside the shocking loss of lives, properties worth thousands on naira were destroyed.

Ishielu LGA Caretaker Committee Chairman, Henry Eze, has called for a probe of the tragedy.

Was there foul play?.
