Contrary to the Nigerian Army’s report that it has successfully rescued some staff of University of Maiduguri and NNPC who were ambushed by Boko Haram insurgents on Tuesday, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said five staff of the institution were recovered dead.

The Army had, in a statement, said that it only recovered the dead bodies of an officer, eight soldiers and a civilian who were killed in the attack.

The Chairman of ASUU, UNIMAID chapter, Dr Danny Manmam, has denied the Army’s claims.

Manman said five of the institution’s staff were killed while four others were still missing.

He gave the professional descriptions of the dead staff as “two geologists, two technologist and a driver”.

“We were first elated when we heard that the military rescued the victims. But, to our dismay we discovered that they were all killed. Our initial hope to see them alive was dashed. The soldiers brought only dead bodies,” he said.

“Four other staff are still missing and we are seriously concerned about their safety, we do not know their whereabouts,” he added.

The military escort, oil workers and university staff were ambushed on their way back from Lake Chad Basin, where they had gone to explore oil.
