Army rescue kidnapped oil men, recover dead bodies of 8 soldiers in Borno

Operatives of the Nigerian Army have said they have rescued all the NNPC staff and recovered the corpses of slain officers who were attacked by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Tuesday.

The terrorists, at about 3.00pm, ambushed the escort and team of Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) staff returning from oil exploration at Barno Yasu, Magumeri Local Government Area of Borno State.

A search and rescue party was quickly launched and the Army pursued the terrorists throughout the night.

The Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, said in a statement on Thursday that they have successfully rescued all the NNPC staff and recovered the corpses of the eight soldiers and a civilian.

They have all been evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital.

Usman said the team recovered 4 vehicles one of which include a gun truck mounted with an Anti-Aircraft Gun, 2 white Hilux taken away from NNPC staff and 1 blue Hilux belonging to CJTF.

They also recovered large quantities of arms and ammunition, several spare tyres, many jerry cans of containing Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant, assorted drugs, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) making materials, reflective jackets and a Motorola handheld radio, among others.

He added that many of the suspected terrorists have been neutralized and search and rescue efforts were still ongoing.
