Bill Gates emphasised that addressing global health inequalities is the foundation’s foremost priority. The foundation focuses on combating diseases such as measles, malaria, and polio.

“We allocate significant resources to Asia, but our investment in Africa surpasses that. Within Africa, Nigeria is our top priority,” Gates stated.

This, he disclosed, “is due to both its large population and the extensive needs present here. We’ve invested billions in Nigeria, and while we’ve seen progress—such as reductions in child mortality—we know there’s still much work to be done.”

Looking ahead, Gates revealed that the foundation plans to increase its investment in Nigeria, particularly in enhancing primary health care.

“Our emphasis is on primary health care because it offers a far greater impact per dollar spent compared to other areas,” he explained.

Beyond health care, the foundation is also heavily invested in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Gates highlighted that improving agricultural productivity is crucial for the country’s economic growth. The foundation aims to achieve this by providing access to high-yield, climate-resistant seeds, fertilizers, and better weather predictions for farmers.

“These efforts will boost agricultural output and help lower food costs,” Gates said. “We’re also supporting food fortification initiatives to enhance the nutritional quality of staple foods, which is vital for public health.”

Gates emphasized the importance of diverse, affordable food options, such as milk and eggs, in combating malnutrition. He stressed that innovative approaches in health and agriculture are essential to making substantial progress in reducing malnutrition.

Since its inception in 2000, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with African regional institutions, national governments, and local communities across 49 countries. The foundation has committed over $7 billion through 2026 to support efforts addressing hunger, disease, gender inequality, and poverty.
