As Nigerians elect new leaders in the 2023 elections, disabled people still face barriers to voting and they are calling for better training of adhoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Tunde Fadiya, a lawyer and visually impaired voter in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, who commended INEC for providing braille materials for the visually impaired, decried the lack of orientation by officials and the lack of provision of unique measures and treatments for PWDs generally.

Also in Ibadan, Oyo state, Lukman Adewale, a voter with disability, at unit 8, ward 9, Omi Adio, Ido local government area (Ibadan), Oyo state, was frustrated by the process.

He said “there’s no special treatment here. All my efforts to vote here since 8 am have been abortive. I wasn’t allowed to vote and I couldn’t stand for a long time. I spoke with the security agents but they refused to render any assistance.”

Their takes call attention to the place of inclusivity as an integral factor in reaching a truly democratic society.
