Nigeria Officially Becomes a BRICS Partner Country, Brazil Confirms
Brazil has officially welcomed Nigeria as a partner country in the BRICS group, a big step in strengthening ties between the Global South nations. The announcement was made on Friday by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighting the growing collaboration within the multinational bloc.
Brazil, which took over the BRICS presidency from Russia on January 1, 2025, emphasized the alignment of interests between Nigeria and the BRICS countries. Both sides are committed to enhancing cooperation among emerging economies and pushing for the reform of global institutions.

With its position as Africa’s largest economy and the world’s sixth-most populous country, Nigeria plays a key role in advancing South-South cooperation. “Nigeria shares convergent interests with BRICS members, especially in strengthening South-South collaboration and advocating for reforms in global governance,” Brazil’s statement said.
Nigeria joins a growing list of partner countries in the BRICS bloc, which now includes Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. This new partnership category was established at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, further expanding the bloc’s global influence.
