New IGP orders immediate disbandment of Federal SARS

Newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu is attempting to immediately stamp his authority on the Force.

Adamu has announced the immediate disbandment of the Federal SARS.

He said on Monday that operatives under the unit will now directly work under police commissioners across all states.

“The operations of SARS which is currently centralised at the Force Headquarters is hereby decentralised,” Adamu said.

“Consequently, with immediate effect, the CP in each of the 36 Police Commands and FCT are to ensure full Command and Control authority on all SARS in their Commands, while the FHQ Unit is, henceforth, subsumed under the command of the DIG FCIID.

“The import of this is that the DIG FCIID and Command CPs shall from this date, not only assume administrative and operational control of SARS in their respective Commands, they shall also be directly held liable for any professional misconduct resulting from the operations of the Units in their Commands.

“Consequently, they are to immediately undertake a detailed evaluation of the Units in their Commands and submit a report to my Office within the next two weeks.”

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had, in the capacity of Acting President last August, ordered the reform of the SARS unit following cries about incessant harassment and extortion of citizens.

Though there was little respite following the order, citizens have continued to express dissatisfaction about the comportment of police officers.

Recently retired Ibrahim Idris had centralised the operations of SARS into Federal SARS when he was appointed IGP.
