NCC unveils national spectrum roadmap to improve network quality nationwide

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a national spectrum roadmap covering 2026 to 2030, aimed at strengthening network performance and advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation through clearer and more predictable spectrum regulation.

The initiative was announced on Monday in Abuja during a stakeholders’ consultation forum, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). Speaking at the event, the NCC’s Executive Vice-Chairman (EVC), Aminu Maida, said the roadmap outlines plans for spectrum management between 2026 and 2030, alongside new guidelines for opening the lower 6-gigahertz (GHz) and 60-GHz licence-exempt frequency bands.

Maida, who was represented by Atiku Lawal, head of spectrum administration at the commission, explained that the measures are designed to enhance the quality of telecommunications services nationwide.

“Nigeria’s national ambitions are expanding. We need faster speeds, broader coverage, improved service quality, stronger innovation and deeper digital inclusion,” he said. “This roadmap provides a transparent and predictable regulatory framework that supports investment, encourages innovation, expands access and improves service delivery for all Nigerians.”

He noted that the guidelines for the lower 6-GHz and 60-GHz bands would unlock additional capacity for high-speed, affordable and reliable connectivity. According to him, spectrum remains the backbone of all digital services, supporting mobile communications, broadband, satellite services, emergency systems and smart technologies.

“Every video call, online lesson, digital transaction and connected device in Nigeria depends on spectrum,” Maida said, adding that the NCC is positioning the country to meet future data demands across homes, educational institutions, businesses, healthcare facilities and public spaces.

Also speaking at the forum, the NCC’s Executive Commissioner for Technical Services, Abraham Oshadami, stressed that spectrum resources must be managed in a way that benefits all communities.

He said the stakeholder engagement underscores the commission’s commitment to expanding wireless broadband through careful planning, fairness and alignment with national development objectives.
