NAF Launches Probe into IKEDC Office Invasion Following Power Disconnection Dispute

In the wake of a troubling incident that shocked Lagos residents, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced a formal investigation into the invasion of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) offices by its personnel on Thursday.

The confrontation, which stemmed from the disconnection of electricity at Sam Ethnan Air Force Base in Ikeja, resulted in injuries to staff and damage to company property, according to officials from both organizations.

“We will investigate what happened and impose appropriate sanctions,” said Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, Adeniran Ademuwagun, during a press briefing. “The Nigerian Air Force takes the safety of citizens very seriously, and Ikeja Electric should continue providing services without fear of disturbance.”

The incident reportedly involved NAF personnel forcibly entering IKEDC premises in response to power cuts at their base. Kingsley Okotie, spokesperson for IKEDC, detailed how air force personnel vandalized the company’s office, physically assaulted employees, and removed various company assets during the altercation.

Ademuwagun described the invasion as “unfortunate” and personally apologized to IKEDC management, emphasizing that the air force remains committed to maintaining discipline among its ranks.

“The dialogue with Ikeja Electric has been fruitful, and we will continue to work on ensuring our men remain under positive control,” he stated. “The Nigerian Air Force is a disciplined force, and any action that undermines our integrity will not be tolerated.”

The severity of the incident was further illustrated by Kola Adesina, chairman of Ikeja Electric, who revealed that approximately 200 staff members were present during the invasion, with at least 10 employees sustaining injuries.

“About 200 staff were on-site when the incident occurred. Reports confirmed that 10 individuals were brutalised, and several office assets were destroyed or removed,” Adesina explained. “It was a terrible experience for our staff, and it disrupted our operations significantly.”

Despite the traumatic experience, Adesina expressed cautious optimism about the resolution process, noting, “We are grateful that the leadership of the Air Force has responded swiftly, and we believe that justice will be served.”

The incident highlights tensions that can arise between essential service providers and security agencies, especially when critical infrastructure like electricity is involved. As the investigation proceeds, many will be watching closely to see how the NAF handles discipline within its ranks and whether compensation will be provided for damages incurred by IKEDC.
