Multiple explosions, gunfire rock Indonesia, kill at least 17
At least 17 people have reportedly been killed following a series of bomb and gun attacks on the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.
Six blasts occurring about 50 metres apart were followed by sporadic gunfire, Thursday, at the Sarinah shopping complex on Thamrin street.
At least five gunmen were among the dead and another five policemen and seven civilians were killed, Al Jazeera reports.
Following a gun battle with the attackers, Indonesia police say they are now on top of the situation.
“We believe there are no more attackers around Sarinah. We have taken control,” Jakarta police spokesman, Col. Muhammad Iqbal says.
Indonesia President Joko Widodo has urged people to remain calm.“Our nation and our people should not be afraid, we will not be defeated by these acts of terror,” he said, in comments broadcast by MetroTV.
“We all are grieving for the fallen victims of this incident, but we also condemn the act that has disturbed the security and peace and spread terror among our people,” he said..
