MTN Nigeria kicked off 2025 with a bold move—investing a record ₦202.4 billion in capital expenditures in just the first three months of the year.

It’s the company’s highest quarterly investment in network infrastructure to date, representing a 159% surge compared to Q1 2024. The funds are going into expanding coverage, boosting data speeds, and strengthening service quality across Nigeria’s increasingly digital economy.

According to MTN, the investment is part of a broader strategy to “enhance quality of service and network capacity” amid rising demand for data and digital services.

The payoff? MTN posted a strong financial rebound in Q1 2025 with ₦133.7 billion in profit after tax, compared to a ₦392.7 billion loss in the same period last year. Service revenue hit ₦1.06 trillion, a 40.5% year-on-year increase, driven largely by increased data usage and voice activity.

Why this matters:

For millions of Nigerians, patchy signals and slow internet have become everyday frustrations. MTN’s massive CAPEX outlay signals an aggressive push to fix that.

Active data users climbed to 50.3 million, up 13%, while the total subscriber base grew to 84.1 million, reflecting growing trust in the network’s coverage and reliability.

Industry insiders say the infrastructure push is long overdue. “CAPEX at this scale is exactly what Nigeria’s telecom space needs,” said one analyst. “It’s bold, yes—but it’s necessary if MTN wants to keep pace with demand and outpace competition.”

As the race for digital dominance intensifies, MTN Nigeria appears to be betting that better coverage, faster service, and reliability will be the real differentiators.
