November 24, 2017
He took the oath of office in front of a jubilant crowd at the National Sport Stadium in Harare, on November 24, 2017 during the Inauguration ceremony.
He got into government as a minister in 1980 when Mugabe started what would become his four-decade reign- and rose to become the vice president. In 2007, a coup that sought to replace Mugabe with him was foiled and he denied being a part of it. He was appointed as the vice president in 2014 but fell out of favour in 2016 and was demoted after his ambition to become president was deemed improper by first lady Grace Mugabe. When the military took over power last week, it was he who was chosen to lead the country after Mugabe’s exit.
