Meet Zimbabwe’s new 75 year old President, Emmerson Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe has sworn in President-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa as the new president after the ouster of long-term ruler Robert Mugabe. At 75 years old, he’s nearly twenty years younger than his predecessor.

He took the oath of office in front of a jubilant crowd at the National Sport Stadium in Harare, on November 24, 2017 during the Inauguration ceremony.

Emerson Mnangagwa, whose removal as vice president by Robert Mugabe led to the chain of events that led to the removal of Mugabe.

He got into government as a minister in 1980 when Mugabe started what would become his four-decade reign- and rose to become the vice president.In 2007, a coup that sought to replace Mugabe with him was foiled and he denied being a part of it. He was appointed as the vice president in 2014 but fell out of favour in 2016 and was demoted after his ambition to become president was deemed improper by first lady Grace Mugabe.When the military took over power last week, it was he who was chosen to lead the country after Mugabe’s exit.
