Lagos Traffic Gridlock: LASTMA boss begs Lagosians to be patient

The continuous traffic gridlock in several parts of Lagos will soon disappear, according to LASTMA boss, Mr Chris Olakpe.

Olakpe has said the gridlock is as a result of ongoing road constructions in the state.

Road users, especially on the Lagos – Abeokuta expressway, complain of spending an incredible amount of time on the roads.

The usual gridlock, Newsroom observed, is mostly as a result of an ongoing construction of a BRT lane.

The construction began sometime last year and commuters are of the opinion that the contractors are taking too long to complete the project.

Commercial bus drivers have also seized the traffic situation as a reason to inflate bus fares to a ridiculously high level.

Olakpe said on Thursday (today), that commuters’ plight will soon be over. He begged for more time and implored motorists to abide by the road signs and instructions from traffic officials.

He said, “The influx is heavy along the corridors but what we are experiencing now is the traffic congestion caused by ongoing efforts of the state governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, to improve on the infrastructure and road networks.

“The cause of the gridlocks is as result of the ongoing construction which will soon ease up in the next few months when the structures are concluded.”

The LASTMA boss also said ongoing constructions are in the best interest of road users.

“The BRT lane along the corridor will encourage many people to abandon their vehicles at home and join the BRT due to its efficiency and timeliness,” he said.

“It is a very vital project that will reduce the number of vehicles along the corridors because many people will prefer using BRT to driving to their various offices.

“With these projects going on across the state, once again, I will say the pain of today will be the gain of tomorrow.

“We should encourage the government to keep the flag flying by obeying traffic rules and complying with the directives of traffic officials,” he added.
