Lagos Police deny SARS shooting, arrest 2 officers
The Lagos State Police Command said it has arrested members of a patrol team led by one Inspector Momoh Sulaiman and one Sgt. Monday Emmanuel in connection with the young man that was shot in Chinese Town, Ojota area of Lagos on Friday.
The police, however, claim the victim, Ademuwagun Temitope Solomon, was not shot by operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), but suffered from the inhalation of tear-gas spray fired by the neighbourhood police patrol team attached to Area-H- Command, Ogudu, Lagos.
This is contrary to eyewitnesses’ account that the victim had only just alighted from a bus when he was accosted for a search.
Police say the officers involved have been detained on the orders of Lagos Police boss, CP Imohimi Edgal.
A statement by police spokesperson Chike Oti said the trial of the offending officers will commence today, and if found guilty of offence of incivility to a member of the public and unlawful exercise of authority, they could face punishment as severe as dismissal.
