Lagos Orders Immediate Evacuation and Demolition of Depleted Police Barrack
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to evacuate and demolish a deteriorated building at the Mopol 20 Barracks, Onigbongbo, Ikeja, to prevent an imminent collapse.
Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), stated on Wednesday that an assessment of the structure revealed a significant risk.
“The findings indicate that the building and adjacent structures must be evacuated with immediate effect,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
LASEMA’s emergency response team has been deployed to coordinate a safe evacuation of residents before initiating the controlled demolition of Block 3 and surrounding buildings.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, “We are conducting a response plan which includes assessment, safe evacuation, and controlled demolition.”
The proactive measures, endorsed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, aim to avert a potential disaster.
“We are taking preemptive action due to the precarious conditions of the building,” Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized.
The Lagos government has stressed that the safety of residents is its priority, and demolition will be carried out swiftly to prevent any loss of life or property.
