Lagos begins demolition of distressed buildings
The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has started the demolition of distressed buildings across the metropolis in a move to stem the tide of collapsed buildings.
About 57 buildings will be brought down, with 34 of the buildings being demolished on Lagos Island.
The process was under the first phase of the demolition of distressed buildings approved by state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, as most of the buildings were a danger to residents.
Also, government had over time served owners of the structures quit notices.
However, government has resolved that once a distressed building had been demolished, the owner would be given 90 days to pay the demolition cost, failure for which would see government seize the property.
Before a building would be demolished, the owner would be given ample time to remedy the situation, which included subjecting the property to an integrity test.
