JUST IN: Buhari agrees to N30,000 new minimum wage
November 6, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari has finally agreed to a N30,000 new minimum wage following lengthy deliberations.
Buhari, on Tuesday, endorsed the amount which the NLC said was the minimum it would accept.
The new amount signifies a N12,000 increase on the current wage. Former President Goodluck Jonathan increased the wage from N7,500 to N18,000 in 2011.
Buhari will now send a bill to the National Assembly to effect the change.
The increase is coming just few months before the general elections in the country.
There are concerns, however, whether state governments would ensure prompt payment of the wage when it officially takes effect, as they earlier claimed they can’t afford to pay more than N22,500.
