IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu calls off election boycott in Southeast Nigeria

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has called off the planned boycott of the presidential election in Southeast Nigeria.

IPOB had initially resolved to embark on a sit-at-home protest on the day of the election if the Federal Government fails to give them a date for referendum that will determine the creation of Biafra.

There were many chants of ‘no election in Biafraland’ among members of the group and many leaders from the Southeast, including Ohaneze Ndigbo condemned the rhetoric.

But Nnamdi Kanu reportedly made a U-turn on his stance regarding the boycott as he declared that their demands have been met and that elections will hold in the region.

The Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, released a statement to this effect in Awka yesterday which disclosed that the group reached the decision to allow polls in the region after consultations with the stakeholders.

“It’s important we notify the world at large and the indefatigable global IPOB family in particular that our supreme leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has called-off the election boycott in Biafraland,” the statement read in part.

This development has inadvertently eased off some tensions that were rearing up in the Southeast as a result of the boycott.
