INEC opens voter registration portal ahead of 2027 general elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the online pre-registration of voters, marking the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to a post on X, the electoral body urged eligible Nigerians to begin their registration via the www.cvr.inecnigeria.org portal. The pre-registration will allow prospective voters to book a date and time to complete the process physically.
Qualified Nigerians, particularly first-time voters, can fill in their details such as names, dates of birth, residential addresses and preferred polling units on the portal. Applicants can also request transfers of voting locations, replacement of lost or damaged permanent voter cards (PVCs), or corrections of personal information.
“In-person registration starts August 25, 2025, at all its 37 state offices and 774 local government area (LGA) offices nearest to you,” INEC said.
The commission explained that the in-person registration would later be extended to other designated centres nationwide, subject to assessments of the CVR exercise, security conditions, and safety of personnel and materials.
INEC emphasised that the exercise is open to new voters aged 18 and above and warned against double registration. “Violators would face penalties,” it cautioned.
The CVR, which will run for several months, will culminate in the publication of a preliminary voter register for public scrutiny before INEC finalises the list of eligible voters for the 2027 polls.
INEC urged all eligible citizens to seize the opportunity to register, stressing that voter registration is key to inclusive participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
