INEC comes under fire over postponement of election

Nigerians have condemned INEC for an “insensitive” postponement of Saturday’s poll.

The electoral body which has had four years to prepare for the election made the announcement just hours before electorates troop out to their respective polling units to cast their votes.

Several Youth Corps members across the country who were serving as ad-hoc staff for INEC were left stranded as the announcement was made Friday midnight.

Neusroom reliably gathers that there has been no provision of proper welfare nor restitution for the members.

Nigerians have also criticised INEC for ruining plans with the postponement. Many have cancelled and rescheduled important engagements to suit the electoral body’s timetable.

“I am disgusted. I purposely fixed my wedding for 23rd of February,” a frustrated soon-to-be-groom, Segun, told our correspondent early Saturday morning over a phone conversation.

“Now I have to postpone it and ensure I notify all the people I had informed earlier.”

Segun is not alone. Corporations, agencies, business owners and millions of people have had to adjust their schedules to align with INEC’s time table.

The commission’s Chairman Mahmoud Yakub has only said the postponement was necessary because of a flaw in preparation.

INEC announcement

Major political parties have kicked against the announcement, with PDP calling for immediate resignation of the INEC boss.
