How Supreme Court Ruling Contradicted Overwhelming Evidence of Election Rigging, Forgery – Peter Obi

Peter Obi

In his first media briefing since the Supreme Court of Nigeria dismissed Peter Obi’s petition against President Bola Tinubu for lacking in merit, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate said that the apex court’s ruling disregarded overwhelming evidence of election rigging and further eroded the confidence Nigerians have in the judiciary.

“It is, therefore, with great dismay that I observe that the court’s decision contradicts the overwhelming evidence of election rigging, the forceful claim of a technical glitch, non-compliance with the rules set by INEC, as well as matters of forgery and identity theft that were brought to light during this election matter,” Obi said at the LP National Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, November 6, 2023.

While acknowledging that the judgment is final and has been accepted by the Labour Party – “as a party infused with the tenets of democracy” – he claimed that the ruling “exhibited a disturbing aversion to public opinion and abandoned its responsibility as a court of law and policy.”

Obi’s reaction to the ruling that affirmed Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s duly elected president in the February 25, 2023, presidential election is coming two weeks after the apex court’s verdict.

The former governor of Anambra State, who benefited from the judiciary when he became the first Nigerian governor to reclaim his mandate through the court, said that the judgment amounts to a breach of confidence Nigerians have in our judiciary.

“To that extent, it is a show of unreasonable force against the very Nigerian people from whom the power of the Nigerian citizens is drawn,” Obi said.

Regarding the future of the Labour Party, Obi said that the party is officially in the opposition and will continue to fight for the people until a new Nigeria is realized.

“A New Nigeria is a destination, not an event,” Obi told newsmen.
