How Federal Government aims to tackle fuel tanker accidents

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says the country has lost N7.157 billion to road traffic accidents involving 116 petroleum product tankers in the first half of 2018.

Due to the recent Road Traffic Crash (RTC) on Otedola bridge of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway where over 55 vehicles were burnt and multiple fatalities recorded, the SGF, Boss Mustapha convened a consultative forum of all stakeholders from the private sector and Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies on Monday.

Below are suggested ways Nigeria aims to tackle fuel tanker accidents:

Ban on importation of trailers and tankers:

Boss Mustapha at the stakeholder’s forum disclosed that the Federal Government has banned the importation of trailers and tankers exceeding ten years from the date of manufacture into the country. The ban, he said, takes effect from January 1, 2020.

Compulsory installation of standard speed limiters:

The government has also ordered the Federal Road Safety Corps and other relevant agencies to ensure enforcement of compulsory installation of standard speed limiters in all haulage vehicles.

Mandatory certification of all haulage vehicles:

There would also be mandatory certification of all haulage vehicles to be carried out twice in a year.

Registration with NARTO:

The forum also resolved that single operators of haulage vehicles must be duly registered with the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), and should comply with the provisions of the Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS).
