House of Reps Orders NCC to Block Pornographic Websites in Nigeria

The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to instruct internet service providers to block all websites hosting pornographic content across the country.

The resolution, passed on Tuesday, followed a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina State. Tafoki raised concerns about the growing influence of cyber pornography, arguing that Nigeria had not taken sufficient measures to curb its spread.

While presenting his motion, Tafoki described pornography as a global challenge, stressing that Nigeria— a country deeply rooted in religious and cultural values— must take a firm stance against it.

“Nigeria is a highly religious country where major faiths prohibit nudity and obscenity,” he stated. He pointed out that several nations across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have enacted laws banning pornographic content, urging Nigeria to follow suit.

Beyond the moral implications, Tafoki referenced warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the harmful effects of pornography, linking it to rising cases of adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he emphasized.

Following a voice vote conducted by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, lawmakers overwhelmingly supported the motion. As a result, the House mandated the NCC to enforce the directive immediately and impose strict penalties on internet service providers that fail to comply.

This resolution marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to regulate online content, sparking debates on internet censorship, personal freedoms, and the enforcement of moral standards in a digital age.
