APC Chieftain Calls Obasa’s Impeachment Necessary to Curb Excesses
Fouad Oki, a prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC), has defended the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, describing it as a crucial step to hold the Lagos House of Assembly Speaker accountable for his alleged misconduct. Oki made the statement on Monday during a live appearance on Politics Today, a program on Channels Television, following Obasa’s removal from office earlier that day.
Obasa, 52, who had served as speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly since 2015 and was in his third term representing Agege State Constituency I, was ousted amid allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of power. His impeachment was confirmed after a series of mounting tensions within the legislative body.
Oki, who has been deeply involved in Lagos politics, argued that Obasa’s impeachment was inevitable, citing the lawmaker’s growing arrogance and disregard for authority. He noted that anyone familiar with Lagos’ political landscape could have predicted the outcome, as Obasa had increasingly started to see himself as an “emperor,” elevating his personal interests above the people’s needs.
One key moment leading up to the impeachment, Oki pointed out, was a troubling incident where the governor and party leadership were left waiting for over four hours during the presentation of the 2025 appropriation bill, with no apology or explanation from Obasa. This event, Oki argued, reflected the speaker’s disregard for established protocol and his perceived invincibility.

“This kind of behavior was a clear indication that Obasa had lost touch with reality,” Oki said. “He thought he was untouchable, but the impeachment was necessary to rein in such excesses.”
Oki also highlighted that the impeachment was aligned with the broader political interests of President Bola Tinubu. He explained that the matter had been brewing before the president’s return and was brought to his attention by the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). Despite attempts to resolve the issues internally, Obasa’s persistent defiance and failure to heed the concerns of party elders ultimately led to his removal.
“By taking this action, the president has ensured that Lagos retains its political significance and leadership,” Oki said. “It’s important for the stability of the state that we address irresponsible behavior and uphold the integrity of its leadership.”
Following Obasa’s impeachment, Mojisola Meranda, the deputy speaker, was unanimously elected to take the helm, becoming the first female speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly since 1999.
