Here’s the Lagos traffic robbery petition nobody wants to sign

A top police official allegedly told the policeman in this new vehicle not drive the dying man in the car.
Just recently, a top police official allegedly told the policeman in this new vehicle not give a dying man a ride.

Following an upsurge in the spate of robbery incidents in Lagos traffic in recent months, an online traffic platform, TrafficChiefNG started to amass signatures for a petition to the Lagos State Government.

The petition, started on October 27, 2015, was “to urge the Lagos State Government to take immediate action against the surge in Traffic Robberies plaguing the State.”

But it seems many Lagosians do not want to be a part of it, as it has gathered only 293 signatures in over one month.

The petition was started on October 27, 2015 and “When we have amassed upwards of 50,000 signatures this petition will be forwarded as a formal complaint to the Lagos State Governor and the IGP to take immediate action,” a statement on the petition website says.

One wouldn’t expect that to be difficult to come by in a state estimated to have about 20 million residents (official figures state otherwise though).

It is not clear whether the petition had anything to do with the state governor’s donation of helicopters, gunboats, and vehicles to Police in November.

“Today, we are raising the bar and repositioning the Lagos State Police Command to a standard comparable to similar outfits in other modern City States. Our Police Command will have its operations significantly driven by the right technology and equipment that will match the emerging sophistication of crime in our contemporary time,” Governor Ambode said at the hand-over ceremony.

And it does seem the governor’s efforts are paying off has reports of such incidences have drastically reduced in recent weeks.

Hence, it is highly unlikely that the petition will garner the 50,000 signatures it needs although two persons still added their signatures just this morning.
