FRSC threatens to impose N5,000 fine on passengers littering roads
The Federal Road Safety Corps will begin to impose a fine of N5,000 on passengers who litter the roads while in vehicles, an assistant Patrol Commander, Chinedu Okafor, has warned.
Okafor urged all vehicle owners to provide waste bins and instruct their passengers against throwing dirt on the road. He described such acts as dangerous to lives of other road users, citing a nearly fatal incident incident he was involved in on the road.
The assistant commander recounted how he got into an altercation with a commercial bus driver after a passenger threw out a nylon bag containing the waste of what she had consumed and it landed on his (Okafor) car’s windscreen.
He said the incident nearly led to an accident as he struggled to regain control of the car.
“Dropping off things from a moving vehicle is wrong,” he said. “It is an offence known as ‘Failure to cover unstable materials’, and it attracts N5,000 fine.”
The act of dropping wastes on the roads by passengers is a common sight across the country, leading to dirty environment and clogged drainage systems.
