Fire razes another Ibadan market — third incident in four months

A late-night inferno tore through Mayegun Cement Store Market in the Araromi area of Agodi-Gate, Ibadan, leaving at least 12 shops in ruins and traders reeling from the loss.

The fire reportedly broke out around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, prompting a swift response from the Oyo State Fire Service after a distress call was placed at 11:02 p.m.

According to Yemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the state fire service, emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene, led by Chief Fire Superintendent Jimoh.

“Upon arrival, our personnel encountered several lock-up shops fully engulfed in flames,” Akinyinka stated. “Our team acted swiftly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. In the end, 12 shops were affected, but we were able to save property worth billions of naira.”

The fire trucks returned to base at 3:18 a.m. after successfully bringing the situation under control.

This incident marks the third major market fire in Ibadan in recent months. In December 2024, the spare parts section of Araromi Market was engulfed in flames, destroying goods worth millions. Just last month, Aleshinloye Market suffered a similar fate, with a fire burning for over 12 hours despite the presence of a fire station within its premises.
