Full Result: Seyi Makinde records commanding win in Oyo governorship poll

Oyo state governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde recorded a commanding win in the Saturday, March 18, 2023, governorship election to secure a second term in office.

Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) easily defeated Senator Teslim Folarin of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to become the second Oyo governor to be elected for a second term. Late Abiola Ajimobi was the first Oyo governor to break the second term jinx in 2015.

In the 2015 poll, Ajimobi defeated former governors Rasheed Ladoja (Accord) and Alao Akala (Labour Party) who is now late. Folarin (PDP) and Makinde (Social Democratic Party) came fourth and fifth respectively in the election.

In the results of the 2023 governorship poll announced on Sunday, March 19, 2023, by the State Returning Officer Prof Adebayo Bamire, the Vice Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, declared Makinde winner of the election after winning by wide margins in 31 of the 33 local government areas in the state, losing only Orelope and Irepo LGAs

Makinde polled 563,756 votes; Folarin polled 256,685 votes while Adebayo Adelabu of the Accord Party polled 38,357 votes.

Makinde’s victory extinguishes Folarin’s second attempt to govern Oyo state after failing in 2015 as the candidate of PDP while Makinde was SDP’s candidate.

Folarin is a former leader of the Nigerian Senate.
