Fire damages Customs marine command office in Lagos
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) western marine command office in Apapa, Lagos, was affected by a fire outbreak on Monday.
The incident reportedly began around 10:23am after an electrical surge occurred in the conference room, with the fire subsequently spreading to other parts of the building.
Officers at the command initially worked to put out the fire before personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived around 10:45am.
Timothy Jonah, deputy comptroller of customs, had just resumed at the command to take over from his predecessor when the incident occurred. He described the fire as unfortunate.
“I just resumed duty to take over, only to witness this fire outbreak,” NAN quoted Jonah as saying.
“Every challenge, though negative, is an opportunity to strengthen our operations. In the meantime, we will set up a committee to investigate the cause of the fire.”
Jonah praised the officers who responded to the incident, commending their prompt action and cooperation with the fire service.
He added that the command would improve its safety measures to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
