FG Secures $52.88 Million in Recovered Assets Linked to Diezani
The Nigerian government has officially received $52.88 million in recovered assets, linked to former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, from the United States. The asset recovery marks a major milestone in the ongoing partnership between Nigeria and the U.S. to combat corruption and promote the rule of law.
The announcement was made during a formal signing ceremony in Abuja on Friday, where Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, detailed the allocation of the recovered funds. Of the total amount, $50 million will be channeled through the World Bank to support the development of Nigeria’s rural electrification project, a key initiative aimed at bringing electricity to underserved regions. The remaining $2 million will be allocated to the International Institute of Justice to strengthen the justice system and further counter corruption in Nigeria.

“This asset return is an important step in the fight against corruption and a testament to President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to addressing this issue head-on,” Fagbemi said. He highlighted that the asset recovery reflects the strong collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, further cementing their shared goals of improving governance and transparency.
In his remarks, U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, emphasized the importance of ensuring that the recovered assets are used effectively and transparently, urging the Nigerian Ministry of Justice to monitor their deployment for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
