Ex-convict in trouble for impersonating Ogun Director of Finance to commit fraud
Police in Ogun have arrested one Surajudeen Balogun for allegedly impersonating the state Director of Finance on Facebook.
Balogun, 46, is said to be an ex-convict.
The fashion designer had been acting as the Director of Finance on the social platform in a bid to dupe unsuspecting victims.
Police spokesperson in the state said Balogun had earlier been convicted for duping a woman, Bimpe Akinmade, of N950,000 having claimed to be an NNPC staff based in Port Harcourt.
He had told Akinmade he needed the sum to secure the release of his brother who was detained at the Ibara Prisons in Abeokuta.
His promise to return the money never materialised as Balogun blocked the woman on his Facebook page. He was later arrested and was made to do jail time.
Police PRO Abimbola Oyeyemi said: “As soon as he came out of prison, he started his nefarious activities again. Luck ran out on him when he was trying to defraud another woman on Facebook under the same guise, unknown to him that the woman is a police officer.”
The police spokesperson said the officer pretended to be dancing to Balogun’s tune until Saturday, February 17, when he was arrested while trying to collect money from the woman.
Balogun has confessed to the crime.
He said he downloaded the picture of the finance Director for use as his Facebook profile in order to deceive his victims.
Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered that proper investigations be carried out on the case. Citizens are also warned to be wary of fraudsters on social media.
